"Together We Rise"
In the Spring of 2021 I had the opportunity to be a part of the Choreography Class where I choreographed a piece for the 2021 Spring Dance Showcase. I received USD's 2021 Undergraduate Research Award for my choreography piece.

I was inspired by the circumstances and emotional impact of the COVID 19 pandemic. The COVID pandemic came out of nowhere and affected so many people’s lives and left little hope for us to come out together and strong.

During this pandemic, Theatre was greatly impacted. For performance artists, the inability to express ourselves the way we were used to was heartbreaking. With "Together We Rise", I wanted to show that together we will find a way out of this difficult time.
I struggled with being able to show togetherness in my piece because of the social distancing mandates that prevented my dancers from touching and even coming near each other. While much of the rest of the world was struggling with the recommendation for six feet of distance, the leading dance organizations and producing companies were recommending eight to ten feet of distance.

In the end, I found a way to portray togetherness through movement and expression without relying on touch or nearness. Through the intentional design of space, time, and energy interacting with moving bodies, we see the dancers fall together, lose together, work together, and in the end rise together.
